Hi guys!
Me again!
Does anyone know of a free / cheap place to get a remedial massage?
I think it would do me the world of good! Apart from CFS I have a disc bulge condition which I do see a physio for from time to time.
Due to severe financial hardship I have had to accept that a lot of things just aren't an option for me but before I go and put the massage in the not possible basket thought I might check with you fine folk.
Also, it is hard to trust just anyone - so I would rather go to someone who has been recommended to me.
I am based in Sydney.
Best wishes,
Marina
Hey Marina I don't know a
Hey Marina
I don't know a place from experience with massage but one place that I know would be cheaper than most is any student college clinic for any of the natural therapies colleges like Naturecare (in St Leonards I think) or ACNT in Surry Hills.
If you google ACNT Student Clinic they have a full price list for a bunch of different stuff that is way cheaper than other places I have found.. i've been going there since I got CFS and have seen naturopaths and homeopaths there for like $25 an hour appt and I'm pretty sure their massages are about the same, maybe a bit more.
All the students are near graduating and just completing their practical hours for the course requirement and everything is overseen by a supervisor. I guess the only thing is that you might have 2 or so people in the room and the supervisor might be explaining stuff as they massage, but if you're desperate for a cheap massage I guess its an option.
Hope its a help =)
ok so it looks like their

Thanks Maribel. I once went to Naturecare to see a Naturopath but hadn't thought about the massage clinic.
Thanks for that - will look into it.

Massage
Back in April, there was a message on this site about a service in Chatswood that would offer free massages to CFS sufferers. The link is here: http://www.me-cfs.org.au/node/281
It's called the Rainbow Room and is offered by a Christian centre. If the service still exists, and Chatswood isn't too far, you could try that. They also offer foot soak, facial, hair treatment and style and morning tea.
Having said that, I've never been so don't know how the massage would be, and whether you'd be comfortable with it. The only other massage places I know of, though, are far from free

Katoomba TAFE, and probably
Katoomba TAFE, and probably all of the TAFEs that teach massage, have a clinic that is quite cheap, something like $15 an hour, where the public can get massage from remedial massage students.
Massage
I suffer from undiagnosed chronic pain and just wanted to mention lymphatic massage, is the one thing besides pain killers that did give me some relief (short term) but any relief is good.
So if you can find one in your area I highly recommend

Massages
I've been getting remedial massages off & on for the past couple of years, they're covered under my private health fund, so last year they were totally covered, & this year with an increase in the price of a massage, I'm paying $3 out of pocket, all for a half hour massage followed by 15 minutes of heat packs. I get mine done at a local physiotherapy centre, so obviously prices vary between areas & centres.
One note about Lymphatic massage, for people with CFS &/or Fibromyalgia, these can be extremely painful, and because of the fact that it massages the lymph nodes, can actually release a lot of toxins & stuff from the lymph nodes, which while thats good, it's not necessarily that great for CFS & Fibro people, I've heard that it can actually knock you on your butt for several weeks. I'm getting this info from my massage therapist in case anyone is wondering.
One final note too: although massages can sometimes be painful at the time of having them done (especially if you're sensitive to pain), the pain should not last, should never be unbearably painful, & definitely never leave bruises unless you bruise very easily (ie because you take blood thinning medicines, or have a blood disorder). So, if you find any (or all) of these things happen after a massage, it's usually a sign of something being wrong with the massage/massage therapist. Also, any massage therapist should check with you how the pressure is throughout the massage.
