Hi everyone,
I am fairly new on this forum. I was diagnosed with CFS this year after having bouts of unexplained illness since 2004. I have been off work and study for the last 3 months and am starting to feel like it would be really good to talk to some people who actually understand and may be share some experiences. I am not bed ridden anymore but still very limited. It would also be good to talk to people who have gotten through the worst of it.
Is there a support group in Sydney that anyone is aware of?
If not, would anyone be keen to start one with me? I am based in the inner west of Sydney (near Leichhardt).
Best regards,
Marina
Support group in Sydney
Hi Marina,
There are some support groups in Sydney, some more official than others. If you ring the CFS Society, they should be able to give you a list of where and when they are held. There are some that are specific to young people, and some that cover all age groups.
I'm further west from you, in the Hills area, but would be happy to talk to you and help out with organising a meet up in your area if you're interested.
I know a few people who have and are improving from CFS. I've got through the worst of it myself, and would be happy to talk to you about this. I know from experience that knowing there can be an end to the tunnel that is CFS can be very encouraging. I've also found chatting about different problems, experiences and solutions regarding CFS to be very helpful.
Feel free to either ask any questions of me via this board, or use the link on my name to email me.
Amy

<-- over that side in the top menu, there's a link

If you scroll down on that page, there is a list of all the support groups. Each one has it's own page, complete with contact information.

Abbey - ME/CFS Society Web Admin
hi
Thanks guys.
Amy - I will write to you with some q's / thoughts etc when my brain is feeling a little less fuzzy
Abbey - thank you for that! I am not quite as ditzy as seems! I did see that link eventually but there are no groups close enough for me unfortunately. This is a big week for me with quite a few changes - so next week i'll be more proactive in getting an inner west group together. Someone had once told me there was a group that used to meet at a book shop in Leichhardt.
Anyway, grateful for the forum for the time being - which I can access from my bed!
Peace,
Marina
creating a support group
Hi Marina,
I hope you are able to get a support group together. I'm in Canberra so no help to you. Getting together with others who have CFS would help me too, but unfortunately the Canberra group meets at 12pm, and I'm having trouble getting out of bed before 4pm at the moment, and have not been out of the house for several weeks. I've been flat out doing uni work from home most of this year, but have recently become too ill to do it at all, so I'm starting to use this forum. It's so good to feel a bit connected and supported as I slide further into the CFS abyss. Abbey and Amy have some gems of insights if you look back through the forum entries
) Good luck with getting your support group together - if you put up some notices in your area you might find that you connect with more people who will be grateful to you for organising something... and if you don't get a good response maybe you could make it a group for people with any chronic illness? Or any invisible illness?

Oh dear, I've just realised
Oh dear, I've just realised that all my smiley faces have turned out as shocked faces on the forum so far!! Will have to work on my smilies!!! : )
Thanks for the great
Thanks for the great suggestions Jules! I will keep you company here for the time being. Although, I am going to my Mum's for a bit - no internet - arrrgghh -how will i survive? - I guess it will be a good time for me to tune in and try and just be - as hard as that can be sometimes
May I ask what you are studying?
I was studying Social Development (Refugees and Forced Migration) at UNSW but think when I go back I will transfer to Psychology.
Good luck with your assessments
Marina
Hey Marina, Just wanted to
Hey Marina,
Just wanted to stick my head in & say hi, haven't been up to posting too much lately.
Also wanted to say hey to the fact that you used to study at UNSW! That's where I'm studying now, doing Social Work, but kind of want to transfer to Psychology.....I liked the one subject of that better than all the subjects so far in social work (but I am only in the first year of it, so maybe it'll improve!!)
Anyway, half asleep at the moment, so I better go!
Take care,
Amy
PS I live near Campbelltown, so not much help as far as close support
I started a new link in "studying with CFS/FM"
Hi Marina,
I replied to your message with a new link in the "studying" topic section in case it might help others who are looking for info/support about studying.
I hope the stay at your mum's is helpful for you and lets you rest well, even if you are offline for a while. We'll be here when you get back
